Toyota Introduces the Super Prius

Toyota has taken another step toward making electric vehicles a basic part of both the auto fleet and of a renewable electric grid with its new plug-in Super Prius hybrid.

The Super Prius expands the lithium battery capacity and therefore all electric range and has the ability to charge using both conventional 110 volt house current, or faster using 220 volt appliance circuits.

The new plug in model, by increasing the storage capacity of the battery, increases the percentage of all electric use in city driving and short trips, and can allow charging from decentralized home and community renewables such as solar PV systems as well as conventional electric power.

Consumers now have three plug-in models to choose from the largest auto manufacturers – the Nissan Leaf (all electric), the Chevy Volt (electric with gas back-up) and the Super Prius, as well as multiple offerings from electric car entrepreneurs.
